Introduction
This is a linear, story-driven, psychological visual novel style game, confronting the shadows of grief and depression, their impact on the mind and the people involved, and discourse about death and life after death.
This game was originally a proto-demo submission for my Halloween 2024 Game Jam, developed in RPG Developer Bakin.
The contents and nature of Afterlife might not be for everyone, as it contains sensitive topics (to some).
You can read the latest major updates to the game on the Dev Logs page.
Personal Notes
Although I had every intention of completing the game before the deadline, and actually had the time to do so, things didn’t quite go according to plan (as is often the case). That meant I couldn’t fully commit to its development. I decided, rather than not submitting anything at all, to submit what I had “as is”.
At the time I was unwell and suffered three losses in a short amount of time, which meant I just couldn’t concentrte on the game as much as I wanted to. I still had to go to work, but spent a lot of my free time grieving and convalescing to take care of physical and mental well-being first.
Post Game Jam Development
Afterlife: In the Shadows has become a “special project” and is in active development alongside my other game S.C.A.I.O.N and side-projects.
I’m taking my time on this game, however, creating all custom game-exclusive assets, fleshing out the story, and developing it as a visual novel style game created in RPG Developer Bakin.
You can download the original Proto-Demo v0.3.5 on its Itch.io page (which will be archived or removed later).
